Bark Beetles, Drought, and Prescribed Fire
Southern Regional Extension Forestry, 2018
Can presecribed fires contribute to the risks of bark beetle infestations and widespread tree mortality?
Fire is an integral component of many ecosystems in the southern U.S., especially shortleaf and longleaf pine systems. The use of prescribed fires not only serves an ecological purpose, but can be a very useful forest management tool. Proper use and implementation of prescribed fire is critical to effective results. If used properly, prescribed fire can control competing vegetation, increase resilience of remaining trees, and improve the health of the forest.
